Latest special coin issue: Swissmint continues its seasons series with the “Winter” silver coin

Bern, 20.10.2026 — Swissmint is continuing its four-part “Four seasons” silver coin series with the “Four seasons – Winter” special coin. Following the launch of the “Summer” special coin in June 2026, the second silver coin in the series will be released on 22 October 2026, showcasing the cold season.

4 Seasons – Winter

Swissmint produces exclusive limited-edition collector coins under the name “Swiss special coins”. The “Four seasons” series artistically highlights Switzerland's seasonal characteristics and diversity. The “Winter” 20-franc silver coin represents the second instalment in the series.

The seasons in Switzerland

In Switzerland, a year can be clearly divided into four seasons. These are caused by the tilt of the Earth's axis (approx. 23.5°) and the Earth's orbit around the Sun. This causes the intensity, duration and angle of incidence of sunlight to change.

Each coin in the series is dedicated to a particular season. Its name and the three months it represents appear in a different national language, reflecting Switzerland's linguistic diversity. The obverse is also decorated with a typical symbol: a seasonal constellation and the Earth's position relative to the Sun. A stylised vegetation cycle connects the four coins on the reverse.

The special coins bring our country's history and memories to life

The new “Four seasons – Winter” special coin is made from a .999 silver alloy. The CHF 20 special coin weighs 20g and has a diameter of 33mm.

In winter, the Northern Hemisphere faces away from the Sun and therefore receives less light and heat. The obverse depicts the Earth in this position relative to the Sun. A snowflake serves as a symbol for the season; at its centre, an intricate outline of the world map, centred on the Southern Hemisphere. Behind the snowflake, the constellation known as the “Winter Hexagon” is depicted in the southern winter sky. Along the edge of the reverse are the words “Enviern” – Romansh for winter – as well as “december, schaner, favrer”, the Romansh names for December, January and February.

The reverse depicts the winter phase of the vegetation cycle with sparse, stylised plants. This section is raised and polished. Around the edge of the reverse is the face value of CHF 20, the inscription “CONFOEDERATIO HELVETICA”, the minting year 2026 and the mint mark B for Bern.

The coin will be released in a limited issue comprising 8,500 coins in uncirculated quality with an issue price of CHF 65, and 3,500 coins in proof quality with an issue price of CHF 110. In addition, the proof quality version is tinted with the season's predominant colour. They will be available as of 22 October 2026 from Swissmint's official online shop.
