Federal Council adopts Digital Switzerland Strategy 2026

Bern, 12.12.2025 — On 12 December, the Federal Council adopted the updated Digital Switzerland Strategy for 2026 and selected the new focus themes. The focus themes for next year are: digital sovereignty, digital host state and the introduction of the e-ID. This reflects the current priorities.

The Digital Switzerland Strategy has existed in its current form since 2022 and is updated annually by the Federal Council. Its aim is to ensure that the whole population benefits from a responsible and sustainable digital transformation (in ecological, economic and social terms). The strategy is a key instrument through which the Federal Council establishes priorities for digital transformation in Switzerland. It is binding for the Federal Administration and serves as a frame of reference for all other players in Switzerland's digital transformation (politics, authorities, business, science and civil society).

In the annual update, the Federal Council defines two to three focus themes for the strategy. The Federal Administration then focuses its work in that year on those priorities and initiates concrete measures. All measures in the Digital Switzerland Strategy are summarised in a public action plan.

The focus themes for 2026 are:

Digital sovereignty: The Federal Administration is enhancing its digital sovereignty and resilience so that it remains capable of resisting and taking action in the event of a crisis.

Digital host state: Switzerland is strengthening International Geneva in the areas of cyber resilience, data centre security and cloud infrastructure, thereby fulfilling its role as digital host state.

Introduction of the e-ID: The e-ID allows people living in Switzerland and Swiss citizens abroad to prove their identity securely online.

One important aspect is the exchange between members of the Federal Council and representatives of civil society, business, science, politics and the authorities. To that end, the federal government organises an advisory board meeting for each focus theme to exchange ideas with the relevant representatives. Each advisory board meeting is chaired by a Federal Councillor or the Federal Chancellor. Thirteen advisory board meetings have taken place since 2021.
